Yesterday my daughter lost her first tooth. You would have thought she won the lottery. She knew the fairy tale about the tooth fairy and she was more excited than if it were Christmas. She came running to me when I picked her up from school smiling to show me the void in her mouth. The first thing she said was, “the Tooth Fairy is coming!” As soon as we got home she was telling me, “I have to get my bath and eat so I can hurry up and get to bed so that the Tooth Fairy will come.” She was in bed early with her tooth under her pillow excited about what she was going to find underneath it the next day.
Sure enough, she woke up and just like she had heard the “Tooth Fairy” left money under her pillow and the tooth was mysteriously gone! Wow! There is no way on earth at this point you could tell her that the Tooth Fairy doesn’t exist. Did she see it?…no but it lined up with what she had been told and it’s magical, mysterious and fantastic so she wants to believe it.
Most of us grew up with these same fantastic stories and traditions. I remember how I felt on Christmas knowing Santa had brought me toys or that I was going to get money for a lost tooth. It’s the same reason why we love a quick fix to our problems. If somebody tells us they have the magic bullet to weight loss we get that same excited feeling. “You mean all I have to do is take this pill and go to bed and I will wake up having lost 2 pounds?” With the right kind of marketing and endorsement we believe the story and buy the product. Some of these products may actually deliver the initial results that they brag about. It makes us believe in the product and its effectiveness. However, the results never last and it leaves us feeling like we’ve failed and that ”now I’ve tried everything.” We want to believe just like my daughter believes in the tooth fairy. “It must be real…look at the scale I’m down 4 lbs since two days ago just like the lady in the commercial.”
It’s very easy to be tempted to buy into the fantastic. We’ve been conditioned to do it since we were kids. The next time you get that twinkle in your eye and start to get that feeling like my daughter had when she lost her tooth, ask yourself a few questions.
- Would I give this product to my kids?
- Will I be able to maintain the rapid results this product is claiming once I stop taking it?
- Does it sound too good to be true (if it does it probably is)?
- Do I know what side effects come with this?
- Do I have to take something else to counter balance this product?
- Do I really know why this product works?
- Would my doctor suggest I use this?
- Can one product solve all my weight problems?
- Can one gadget really work my entire body or give me abs?
If you don’t feel comfortable with the answer to any one of these questions then don’t take the product.
